The phrase "Persons with mental illnesses" exemplifies Person First Language because it emphasizes the individual before any diagnosis or label. This approach advocates for recognizing the person as a whole rather than defining them solely by their mental illness. By placing the individual first, this language helps to reduce stigma and acknowledges their humanity, promoting a respectful and empathetic perspective.

Using Person First Language is important in fields like mental health support, as it fosters a more supportive environment for individuals experiencing mental health challenges. In contrast, the other options may inadvertently define individuals by their conditions, which might contribute to stigma or a one-dimensional view of their identity. For instance, phrases such as "the mentally ill" or "individuals suffering from mental health issues" can reinforce negative stereotypes, while "people with diagnosed conditions" might focus solely on the diagnosis without considering the person as an individual with unique experiences and qualities.
